Who we are
Sudhu Sundarban Charcha is a Bengali magazine, published quarterly, and focuses on the Indian territory of the Sundarban. Initiated with an approach to stand by the side of the locals, the magazine lends a patient hearing to the silent voices and emphasizes on recognizing potential where others see utter despair.
The daredevils of Sudhu Sundarban Charcha invade the most inaccessible, severely vulnerable places in the archipelago, where most others often fall short of courage. It represents analytical documenting, coupled with visuals that speak louder than words.
Tepantarer Swapna, our welfare arm, comprises of generous, passionate, and determined people from all over West Bengal, India. Observing the ever-changing history of the archipelago by exploring humanity, the cultural heritage, and by serving the human resources of the Sundarban is the focal theme of our magazine.
We carry the ambition to learn at the edge, gain wisdom to admit failure, and possess undaunted determination to start afresh if we falter.
What we do
Since 2010, we have been publishing the magazine “Sudhu Sundarban Charcha” containing various research articles and powerful photographs depicting the daily life on Indian part of the Sundarban. This enables us to unveil many new aspects of different societal practices of the delta in the past few years. The sale proceeds are spent on development of the local community of the Sundarban.
Sudhu Sundarban Charcha and Tepantarer Swapna jointly nurture a healthy cultural development, historic preservation, and an environment for education in different parts of the islands, especially among students. Our regular programs encourage the students for nature study, and help to develop a habit of reading out-of-syllabus books and take part in extra-curricular activities. While exhibitions are organised to generate scientific awareness among the children, educational trips help to inculcate scientific temperament among them. We have been providing need-based financial support and customised assistance to people affected by natural calamities through the year.
A well-established library with an impressive stock of books, and collection of almost all newspaper clippings since past 12 years and nearly all the books published on the Sundarban so far is what makes us feel pretty proud. All the clippings and other publications are well maintained in a chronological order for more than a decade — providing an insight to the wealth and treasures of the Sundarban and her people.
The Sundarban is not merely a forest, it’s also a residence to 4.5 million people. It is an active delta formed by the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna rivers, surrounded by dense mangrove forests. Encompassed by numerous rivers and small estuaries, these islands are directly or indirectly nourished by the saline water of the Bay of Bengal.
In an effort to capture the daily saga of the islanders between the covers of a journal, we are going beyond the covers of the comfort zone. Team Tepantarer Swapna has been working since the last 10 years in and around a few selected villages of a few chosen islands of the Sundarbans. Satjelia of Gosaba Block, Mausuni of Namkhana Block, G-Plot Island of Patharpratima Block are few such places where we are working hand in hand. We try our level best to support students with lesser financial sustainability and fewer resources for pursuing their educational aspirations. We firmly believe that our continuing efforts are bound to bring profound impacts in this region.

+91 97321 65813For the last forty years, the vision of Tushar Kanjilal was to develop the region from a remote island in the Sundarban to a region with modern basic amenities, by working on grass-root level. The dividends of his work are spread over a wide area of the Indian Sundarban. This book attempts to exhibit his multi-faceted works, mirrored through the pens of some of the eminent personalities of the society.
